Rotary Clubs meet on a regular basis, which allows members to build firm friendships. Every Rotarian has a right to attend any Club meeting anywhere in the world.
If you travel, there is always somewhere to go and people to meet, wherever business or leisure travel may take you.
There are 34,000 clubs worldwide, helping those in need and working towards world understanding and peace. It is a fulfilling role, and Rotarians can get involved as much or as little as their time will allow.
Fight against Polio
Currently, Rotary's best known Global Project is End Polio Now. Polio is a terrible disease that either cripples for life or kills its victims. It's also an easily preventable disease with an oral vaccine. Rotary took on the challenge to cure the world of this disease in 1988. When we did, there were hundreds of thousands of diagnosed cases a year. In 2012 there were 291, and in 2014 a few under 400. There are now only 3 countries in the world that are endemic; Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. It is with cautious optimism, the last reported case of Polio in Nigeria was in July of 2014. These last few countries are proving to be difficult, The vaccine needs to be kept cold and these countries are hot and mountainous and often have no roads, so getting the vaccine safely to the people can be challenging, not to mention very dangerous.
Why are these few cases important? The World Health Organization says that these few cases would become 200,000 worldwide in 10 years if left unchecked. So we must remain vigilant.
Local Projects
We support many local projects every year, some are the local food bank, Santa Claus Parade, the grade 2 Christmas party for longer than anyone can remember, and we try to send a student to "Adventures in Citizenship" in Ottawa every year we are accepted (Thank you Ottawa Rotary Clubs it is an amazing program), along with one time special projects such as ... we purchased an "Olympia" ice cleaning machine, for our Community Centre/Local Ice Arena, new Front Doors for the Community Centre, we placed a Town Clock in the Square and gave a large financial donation to build the local medical clinic. The list goes on. Is this something you would like to be part of?
